Here are the show notes for Fri Mar 31st 2023 / Season 4 Episode 27 ...

❿Headline: I say As You Get Older, Start Breaking Old People World Records because there are a bunch to be had!
Notes:
- Colorado man is oldest person to cross the Grand Canyon.
- the guy is 91 years old.
- it's around 24 miles to hike from one edge of the Grand Canyon down through to the other edge.
- took 5 days.
- Did I mention he was 91? Because he was 91!
Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/24/Guinness-World-Records-oldest-person-cross-Grand-Canyon/4351679681602/)
❾Headline: how many drinks can the longest bar in the world hold?
Notes:
- distillery in Tennessee broke the record for the longest bar in the world.
- it's 518 feet long.
- The Humble Baron whiskey distillery in Shelbyville beat the old world record by more than a 100 feet!
- so if you lined up shot glasses on that bar you could fit more than 3000 along that bar...
- if you don't have a chance to watch the video, it's not one long straight bar, it's a long and winding bar with a bunch of twists and turns.
Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/24/Guinness-World-Records-longest-bar/6761679670060/
❽Headline: How fast is world record fast when it comes to solving those cubes?
Notes:
- A 9 year old kid from China broke a Guinness World Record for fast Rubik's Cubetology©
- he solved the cube a bunch of times and then they took the average... which was 4.69 seconds.
- the video is fascinating... if you don't have a chance to watch... they let you look at the unsolved cube for like ten seconds or something, I guess so that you can solve it in your head... then you put your hands down and it's on your mark, get set, go! and less than 5 seconds later... done!!
- imagine having a kid and buying them this fun toy to keep them busy... and they're done it in 5 seconds. "You're done the cube already? What about your homework? Done. Go rebuild the motor in the Chevette." *suggested parenting. Results may vary.
Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/23/Guinness-World-Records-speedcuber-Rubiks-Cube-average-time/3691679593102/)
❼Headline: very large Cake Ball sets world record... also, what is a cake ball?
Notes:
- Cake Ball? I was shocked to learn about a dessert that I had never heard of before.
- Cake Balls are what I would call Cake Pops.
- Scooter's Coffee, a chain out of Nebraska has made an enormous ball of cake that weighs 848 pounds!
- That's the biggest Cake Ball in the known universe.
Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/23/Guinness-World-Records-largest-cake-ball/9861679585282/)
I live in Tim Horton's country and never heard of Scooter's Coffee before but I gotta say, they are kind of hilarious...
❻Headline: Followup to the book thief story...
Notes:
- we talked about this crime when the story first broke... this person was conning famous authors to get manuscripts of books that weren't published yet...
- a 30 year old fellow has been sentenced to time served after pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud.
- None of these manuscripts were leaked or sold on the dark web or anything like that...
- over a thousand manuscripts were involved in this scheme... the guy just liked reading these manuscripts before anyone else and got a charge out of this weird, not-for-profit con...
- But how did he do it?? He just pretended to be some kind of publishing bi wig, and apparently if you know the right words and who to email, they'll send you those bestsellers.
Link/media: (https://apnews.com/article/book-thief-filippo-bernardini-sentenced-9d45586dedaad6133a683dcdba09c960)
❺Headline: The Secret Bathroom!
Notes:
- A British lady was renovating her bathroom and while investigating a leaky shower, discovered a whole other shower behind her present shower...
- there's a second shower with a tiled wall and even a mirror back there?
- who did that? Who decided that, instead of replacing the existing shower, they would just put a new wall up and start again with a whole new shower? That's weird, right?
Link/media: (https://www.newsweek.com/shock-woman-uncovers-tiled-shower-behind-leaking-bathroom-1790800)

❹Headline: How Big is the Biggest Charcuterie Board in the World?
Notes:
- kids from a high school in California broke the world record for a charcuterie board that's over 204 feet long!
- that's a lot of salted meats and cheese you guys.
- They used recycled gym bleachers to make it.
- It had over 500 pounds of meats and cheese and also nuts, dried fruits, olives and other foods.
Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/28/Guinness-World-Records-longest-charcuterie-board/8271680021070/)
❸Headline: You know the Woolly Mammoth? Now you can eat Woolly Mammoth meat meatballs...
Notes:
- icymi (this story was in a lot of newscasts this week) they have grown Woolly Mammoth meat in a lab and they made a meatball out of it...
- a Mastodon Meatball you guys! You can't buy these meatballs yet, it's more of a proof of concept for lab-grown meats.
- we've heard of lab-grown meat before, but did you ever think we might someday be able to eat extinct meat? Dinosaur meat can't be that far off you guys.
- will this solve world hunger? or will it be something for rich people to do (eating T-Rex burgers or something.)
Link/media: (https://apnews.com/article/mammoth-meatball-cultivated-meat-agriculture-sustainability-30e0731838f52cc18fb22d1faee1f8ce
❷Headline: Another week, another ping pong ball world record attempt... and this one has me furious...
Notes:
- Elite athletes, you guys. They can break world records that the rest of us weirdos could never do.
- That's why I'm so enraged at these Harlem Globetrotters. They could've broken any basketball-related world record in the book, but instead they broke the Guinness World Record for beer pong, essentially.
- "fastest time to bounce a Ping-Pong ball into 5 cups." is the official name.
- Come on, Harlem Globetrotters.. leave the beer pong record attempts to us non-famous, barely able to walk up the stairs, normal folks.
Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/29/Guinness-World-Records-Harlem-Globetrotters-ping-pong-balls/3551680102494/)
🏆Headline: Nightmare Alert... spiders!
Notes:
- Hannah Osborne writing for Live Science gets the headline-of-the-week award for this one... "Deadly spiders that can kill in minutes and survive underwater are hiding out in swimming pools".
- In Australia, people are finding scary and dangerous spiders in their swimming pools...
- this is weather-related (because of heavy rain washing the spiders into pools).
- I'm gonna pass on the pool party tfn.
Link/media: (https://www.livescience.com/deadly-spiders-that-can-kill-in-minutes-and-survive-underwater-are-hiding-out-in-swimming-pools)
actual size. jk. actual spider is bigger.

❶Headline: Gold Nuggets are still a thing you can find and strike it rich!
Notes:
- an amateur gold-finding digger-upper in Australia found a great big nugget worth $240,000 Australian dollars.
- Found in an area known as the Golden Triangle.
- rock weighed around 10 pounds, gold was around 5 and a half pounds of that.
- I realize I have no idea how much gold is worth because I would've thought that 5 pounds of gold would be worth a kazillion dollars.

Notes:
- Happened at the Clearview Mall in Pennsylvania.
- police caught the suspects, charges are expected.
- 2 ppl stole a giant foam carrot and a piñata from a mall Easter display.
- Sweet Lord, when the suspects took off a security guard got dragged by the getaway truck for a quarter mile.
- no one was hurt.

- Hollywood treatment please.

   "a truck hauls giant carrots"

❾Headline: Heat from a computer set-up used for swimming pool...

Notes:
- this is a good news story about how we really can have it all you guys!
- this computer set-up is a washing machine size data center.
- it throws heat while it does computery data center duties.
- they use oil to capture the heat... this setup has some kind of container with oil and computers in it... the oil catches the heat and it's enough to heat a swimming pool.
- this solves the problem of data centers needing a way to cool off and swimming pools needing some of that sweet sweet  heat!

   the future of swimming

❽Headline: Friends, it appears as though we've got a Sharkgate on our hands...

Notes:
- Gizmodo put this deep dive out last Friday...
- this involves a rare Goblin Shark discovered in the Mediterranean Sea.That never happened before.
- but upon further investigation, that photo might not be of a real shark.  - it could be a toy shark.
- so, was the shark discovered after it washed ashore at a Greek beach? That was the original story.
- the photo appeared in a science journal and then the shark experts started to point out that they think it's a fake. - Then it became a big fight where ppl were like "it is TOO a Goblin Shark!" and "That aint no Gobby!"
- somebody found a toy shark on EBay that looks the same.
- Sharkgate, y'all.

Link/media: (https://gizmodo.com/goblin-shark-photo-plastic-toy-drama-mediterranean-1850237339)
   seems sus to me

❼Headline: The Rolls-Royce of Nuclear Reactors! (will be made by Rolls-Royce). Oh, yeah, and it'll be on the moon.

Notes:
- Rolls-Royce co. got funding from the UK Space Agency to make a moon base nuclear reactor.
- this is about developing a small reactor for when we get moon bases up and running and the fact that the moon base will be powered by RR sounds so classy!
- it's your move, Grey Poupon.

Link/media: (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/mar/17/rolls-royce-secures-funds-to-develop-nuclear-reactor-for-moon-base)
it hardly seems dystopian at all!

❻Headline: Man gets enormous fine for parking in a disabled parking spot... but if what he says is true, it's a wild story that you're gonna love or love to hate...

Notes:
- happened in London
- guy has been fined 650 Pounds!
- basically he says he parked legally and some days later, when he got back to his vehicle, the spot had been changed to a disabled parking space.
- it appears like that part is true, that they painted lines around the car.
- the parking fine guy got in the news about ... he was pretty angry.
- if you were a city worker in charge of painting some new lines, would you paint around a BMW or would you wait three weeks for it to be moved? I'm having a moral dilemma.

Link/media: (https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/furious-motorist-is-fined-650-after-council-worker-paints-disabled-bay-around-his-parked-car/ar-AA185FVr?ocid=Peregrine)

❺Headline: When sloths attack!

Notes:
- it's a great headline "
Sloth bites teen during visit to Michigan pet store, ruining lifelong dream"
- that headline via Cole Waterman at MLive doing some great headline work for the greater Michigan area.
- story from Saginaw where a teenager's dream of meeting a sloth was finally coming true at an exotic pet store...
- this pet store has a sloth experience where you can pay 50 bucks, sign a waiver and meet Sid the sloth, that's what this girl and her mom were doing.
- Teen had to get rabies shots.
- Sid got quarantined for 30 days.
- Mom says the sloth bit her daughter with the swiftness of a striking snake.
- This is so weird it should be made into a special episode of When Animals Attack.

Link/media: (https://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw-bay-city/2023/03/sloth-bites-teen-during-visit-to-michigan-pet-store-ruining-lifelong-dream.html)
   psycho killer

❹Headline: The one with the GIANT RADISH!

Notes:
- it was over a hundred pounds!
- harvested by employees at a Japanese fertilizer company.
- radish was harvested in Feb. according to Guinness World record people.
- they let the radish grow for an extra 3 months before harvesting it... is that the secret? Just leave things in the ground longer? But I want my giant radish now?!

Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/14/japan-Guinness-World-Records-heaviest-radish/1071678807107/)
   the big radish

❸Headline: Sneaky Thief has change of heart!

Notes:
- happened in Cincinnati
- lady caught on cam stealing a mat from someone's porch.
- later she brought it back with an apology note.
- note said "this didn't match my decor like i thought it was gonna so i am returning it. do you have anything in teal?" hahahahaha just kidding.
- actually, a week later the lady came back, left the mat and her note said "I am exceedingly apologetic for taking your rug. It was an honest mistake. I was trying to pick up a free rug from a craigslist offer and I obviously got the wrong one.”

Link/media: (https://www.fox19.com/2023/03/15/woman-caught-cam-stealing-northside-couples-rug-returns-it-with-note/)

❷Headline: When you win the lotto and your town only has 27 people in it, how do you stay under the radar?

Notes:
- a lady in a little Colorado town won 250K.
- she doesn't want her name out there but the town population is only 27 so what can you do?
- happened in Cowdrey, Co.
- What we know... Joanie is her first name. She raises alpacas and wants to buy more with her winnings.
- it really is a very small place (https://www.uncovercolorado.com/towns/cowdrey/)

Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/17/colorado-lottery-winner-small-town/7291679071091/)
downtown Cowdrey (it's not always this busy)

🏆Headline: Popcorn World Record is up for Grabs...

Notes:
- a fella in Idaho caught 36 pieces of popcorn out of a popping pot. He did it in a minute.
- This is David Rush who has hundreds of world records and uses these record attempts to promote STEM education... so we're not allowed to get cynical about it. He's a hero you guys. A popcorn hero.

Link/media: (https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2023/03/20/Guinness-World-Records-David-Rush-most-popping-popcorn-caught-one-minute/4731679323644/)

What a Weird Week Podcast Friday, March 17: Some Uplifting Stories of Weird Triumph! Also, Happy Saint Patricks Day!

This week's top ten of weird includes an animal rescue story where the animal was high on cocaine at the time! Also a new world record that you can easily break and become famous! *citation. If you're new here, every Friday we do a Weird-News-of-the-Week Top 10 podcast with a full show notes blog  and a video podcast on YouTube (@weirdweekpod).

Here's the video version...

Here are the show notes for Fri Mar 17th, 2023 / Season 4 Episode 25 ...

❿Headline: Would You Regret Calling in the Animal Rescue Experts if this was your House?

Notes:
- People heard weird noises coming from their wall... OMG there's an owl in there... some kind of bird?!! (calls the animal rescue experts)
- wait... the sound isn't coming from the wall... it's coming from ... UNDER THE SOFA!!!!
- it was a Harry Potter plush owl making magical owl noises under the sofa.
- shoutout to Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue in the UK.

Link/media

❾Headline: Never attempt this world record. Please never do it. Unless you're this guy or Tom Cruise.

Notes:
- a fellow in Armenia has broken the world record for most chin-ups done in one minute while hanging from a flying helicopter.
- it's 32 btw. That's the record.
- His technique was a hands-over-the-bar method instead of hands under... I don't think you could grab the helicopter skids in an under grip unless you were Huge Hands Hans.
- he wore a hard hat.
- the helicopter wasn't way high in the sky, but those things can still crash so please don't try this one.

❽Headline: Hero Tries to Save us all from Chicken Wings Fraud?

Notes:
- A guy in Chicago behind a class-action lawsuit against Buffalo Wild Wings says boneless wings aren't wings... just overpriced chicken nuggs (paraphrase).
- Here's the quote: "This clear-cut case of false advertising should not be permitted, as consumers should be able to rely on the plain meaning of a product’s name and receive what they are promised,"
- He's fighting this fight for all of us.

❼Headline: Amazing Backwards Basketball Shot!

Notes:
- (Commentary) When you dominate a sport while doing it backwards, that makes me feel extra bad about my own lack of athletic skill. So I argue that this is a bad news story and not at all uplifting.
- A guy just made a really long backwards basketball shot and now has a new Guinness World Record.
- Jeremy Ware made a backwards basket from 85 and a half feet away.
- He practiced this for years and years.
- Here's the quote: "In high school, I was voted most likely to break a world record". Who voted for Jeremy? Predict my future next.
- He set the record in style, at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, with the Spurs mascot and cheerleaders on hand.

and video embed...
❻Headline: Saucy License Plates and why we need to fight for/against them...

Notes:
- Story from Maine...
- The forbidden license plate says "LUVTOFU"
- So I read that as a saucy statement, and it seemed reasonable to me that the state of Maine wouldn't want the FU license plate driving around town, enraging people at every turn. But then I found out the car owner likes tofu... the food... they're vegan.
- this story is about the vegan family fighting for their right to spread a vegan message via their license plate.
- the story also talks about how in Maine, for awhile, they didn't screen personalized license plates for sauciness and things went off the rails a little bit... so they had to start screening license plates again.
- this is a tough one because... Freedom of Speech vs. My Hurt Feelings is a difficult world to navigate.
- I'll leave you with these questions... Are people sometimes too sensitive? Are people sometimes inappropriate? Should the government decide what words are bad, or should it be up to the gen pop? Do people with personlized license plates drive better in your experience?

❺Headline: Vinyl Albums dominate the music industry again!?

Notes:
- Vinyl record sales have been climbing... and now it's official that for the first time since the late 1980s, vinyl has out-sold compact discs.
- This stat is about units sold, not how much money they made... because vinyl records have been making more money than CDs for awhile now!??!
- vinyl made over a billion dollars last year and CDs only made $483 million.
- insert joke about my car cassette player here. or don't.

❹Headline: Sweet Freedom you guys! The courts have ruled that bird-flipping is not illegal!

Notes:
- headline from the Guardian in the UK was "Giving the middle finger is a ‘God-given right’, Canadian judge rules"
- seems like a bit of a step backwards for us polite Canadians...
- This started as a battle of neighbors in Quebec. It seems like they hated each other.
- The defendant in the case is a Quebec teacher. His neighbor said some bad stuff, and so the teacher told his neighbor where to go and made the gesture... they had video evidence of the gesture you guys.
- The neighbor called 911.
- The judge was not too happy about this case wasting valuable court resources.
- The judge seems like an interesting person... some quotes... "The middle finger gesture... may not be civil, it may not be polite, it may not be gentlemanly … Nevertheless, it does not trigger criminal liability... the court is inclined to actually take the file and throw it out the window... Alas, the courtrooms of the Montreal courthouse do not have windows.”
- This was a 26-page decision.

❸Headline: Not a close call, not a near-miss, an actual earth smashing asteroid is in the news!

Notes:
- I always make fun of how we learn about these asteroid close calls the day it's supposed to happen... or the next day when we don't get vaporized... but this time, science is giving a little bit of lead-time! I call that Bunker Building Time!! ©weird week bunkers-n-more
- asteroid has fairly catchy name of 2023 DW.
- European Space Agency has put the asteroid on the Risk List and it has jumped right up to number one on the list!
- asteroid is the size of an OSP (Olympic Swimming Pool).
- the article says the asteroid is "currently predicted to pose no unusual level of danger" it's just that they might be off on how large the thing is... so if they have that wrong... trouble maybe.
- right now the odds of earth getting hit are about 1 in 607.
- also, the time frame is around Valentine's Day 2046.

❷Headline: Cocaine Bear has new competition you guys...

Notes:
- the headline from Fox 19 in Cincinatti... "Exotic cat that escaped during Oakley police stop, tested positive for cocaine, now at zoo"
- that headline via Kendall Hyde... Kendall, you're in charge of headlines from now on.
- the police were arresting a guy and this exotic cat jumped out of the guy's car and ran up a tree...
- This cat was around 35 pounds, it did NOT want to come down from the tree but the officers on-scene managed to get it into custody... later on they found out how dangerous this cat might have been... also the cat had cocaine in its system.
- a cocaine cat you guys! (contacts Hollywood with script idea...)
- The Cincinnati Zoo took in the serval, and says the cat is doing well.
- how do you even get a cat to kick its cocaine habit though??

❶Headline: Exciting and Foamy World Record that YOU can break this weekend!

Notes:
- The other day the Guinness World Records people tweeted "New record: Most table tennis balls bounced and caught in shaving foam on the head in 30 seconds (individual) (12) by Oscar Lynagh
yes, this is a real record you can try at home!"
- Oscar's team covered his head with shaving cream then... 30 seconds on the clock... and Oscar bounced ping pong balls off the wall and caught them on his shaving cream head. Try it this weekend after you're tired of beer pong maybe. You only need 13 to be the best in the world!!!!

Your votes later, but for now here are the top-selling cereals in the USA and how much money they bring in per year (hard to find Canadian stats on this, so we went with US stats.) Also, are there any of these best-sellers that you haven't tried? How is it possible that we haven't tried every one of these if they're top-sellers? That freaked my bean a little bit...

Video: These cereal fails are pretty interesting... *may contain swears* or read the list here: (https://phantomstrider.fandom.com/wiki/Worst_Cereal_Failures)

... and what about the time they spent millions to market this cereal-and-milk travelin' pack? This one should have been the greatest cereal invention of all time! (via https://www.businessinsider.com/food-failures-2012-1#kelloggs-breakfast-mates-6)

Note for my kids: Back in the day you could get free prizes in a box of your favorite cereal... really cool stuff  like a tiny plastic submarine, or a miniature sticker book with stickers that you had to lick... MMmmmgluey. Prizes co-mingled with the cereal and required careful extraction because no one wanted to wait until the cereal was gone to get that plastic Cap'n Crunch Ring. Rings are meant to be worn, they are not meant to linger amidst 800 grams of toasted corn mush. Anyways... HERE is a list of the coolest cereal box prizes of all time.

What we noticed by your texts:
- Most Popular Overall based on your votes was a toss-up between Honey Combs, Froot Loops, or Lucky Charms.
- Most Popular "Healthy" cereal based on your texts was Vector.
- Best New Cereal as voted by you is the Tim Hortons Apple Fritter Cereal.
- Most Popular Old-school Award went to Fluffs or some variation of the 'No Sugar Added' puffed type of cereal.
- Strangely Absent from your Votes was Golden Grahams, Rice Crispies, and Corn Pops. Hardly anybody voted for these and we were surprised.
